Practice tip: managing change in HJP

We hear from many HJPs that high staff turnover is common across health and legal assistance services – and that this can have a detrimental effect on the impact of your work in health justice partnership. We’re always working to advocate for more sustainable HJP funding models and systemic shifts and supports that might encourage better staff retention, but we know that staff change is unavoidable and is impacting the work of HJPs right now.

But not all change blindsides us the way the COVID-19 pandemic has. There are key change scenarios and events that we all know occur with relative frequency across health and legal assistance services. The task for HJPs is to discuss change in their partnerships, and plan for these events.

To help discuss change in health justice partnership we have created a resource, Managing change in your partnership. It provides a useful guide and template for conversations we encourage you to have as you plan for, and mitigate against, the impacts of change (whether it be staff turnover, changes to policy and funding, opportunities to translate and scale your work, or even scaling back or winding up your activity).
