Submission: Changes to charity governance standards

In 2021 the Government introduced new regulations to give the charities regulator sweeping powers to deregister charities for speaking out on behalf of the communities they serve. We believe strategic advocacy is vital to improving the way services and systems respond to complex need that affects people’s health and wellbeing.

As a member of the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS), we were part of the successful Stronger Charities Alliance campaign against these changes, allowing our sector to continue advocating for structural changes that make people’s lives better in the long term, instead of just picking up the pieces when systems fail them.
